Second (given/Christian) name
Explanation:
It's your second Christian/given name. That's what they want in the Green Card lottery :-). It's *not* your last name.

Thanks, Eduardo :-) Just keep in mind that the term \"Christian name\" is also used in the secular world. For example, one might ask a person \"What\'s your Christian name?\" without knowing whether this person has been baptized or not. To cut a long story short: A \"middle name\" is basically your second *given* name.

Second name

Explanation:
For example, my full name is Ian Richard Burley, Richard being my middle name. It's usually just one name in the UK but here in France it can be two or three. It's definitely not a second surname.

agree  xxxsarahl: nice explanation, Ian Richard!//Sarah Deborah :-)in the old days, in France, people would give their children multiple names to protect them against witchcraft. The witch had to know ALL the names to be able to cast a spell.

agree  Madeleine MacRae Klintebo: You're lucky Ian. If your parents give you two names and call you by the second one, your second name becomes your 'first name'. Your first name is thus not your 'first name', but at the same time can't possibly be your 'middle name'. Help!!!

-> Wow, that's quite a dilemma. Sounds like one of those old logic puzzles!

agree  James Girard: A middle name nowadays is a legacy to old European traditions. It is usually used to pass down family names in an awkward but sentimental way. Today, middle names are only used for differeniating between two people who have the same first and last names.

it's a second "Christian" name, not a last name.

Explanation:
o sea, José Luís, Luís would be the middle name. NO es primer o segundo apellido.

Could be a given name OR a confirmation OR a baptismal name...
