English to English translations [PRO] Law/Patents - Law: Contract(s) / Rennrad | | English term or phrase: use the information that we collect about you lawfully | We are committed to protecting your privacy. ***We will only use the information that we collect about you lawfully.*** We collect information about you for two reasons: firstly, to process your order and secondly to provide you with the best service possible. We will not email you in the future unless you have given us your consent. We will give you the chance to refuse any marketing email from us in the future.
Does ***lawfully*** refer to ***use*** or to ***collect***? I think it means ***to use the collected information lawfully***, but my proofreader disagrees ;-).

| | English translation:use lawfully the information that we collect ... | Explanation: Yes, it is badly written and ambiguous; but think about it. If it is the collection of the information that they are saying is lawful, then that implies very strongly that they are also unlawfully collecting information and they would hardly want to be saying that.

Yes, I am sure. Putting an adverb at the end of a sentence, where it becomes unclear which verb it modifies is not an unusual error in English and one has to resort to looking at the sense rather than rules of grammar to understand the intended meaning.

A clearer way to write the sentence would be:
We will make only lawful use of the information that we collect about you. |
