English term or phrase: custody
Hello everyone,

With the assistance of various specialists within establishments, a prison officer’s job is to ‘look after’ prisoners... Custody, Care and Control are key features of a prison officer’s job.

According to the dictionary:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/custody

–noun, plural -dies.
1.
keeping; guardianship; care.
2.
the keeping or charge of officers of the law: The car was held in the custody of the police.
3.
imprisonment; legal restraint: He was taken into custody.

What does "custody" imply in "Custody, Care and Control" in this context - depriving prisoners of their liberty, keeping them in prison, or is it a synonym for "care"?

Thank you.
