English term or phrase: a sentence containing 'only'
Nishio sensei, aprart from aikido practiced some other budo, such as iado, jodo., etc.

What woulld be 'more normal' to say in English:

1. Aikido was not the only thing that Nishio sensei practiced. (I think it's slightly better)

2. Nishio sensei practiced not only aikido.

Or may be there is some better choice?

English translation:Aikido was not the only discipline
Explanation:
I would go with 1 but maybe change "thing" to "discipline" or another more definite word encompassing Aikido and other similar arts. Or art, if it's general arts in the wider context.

not only ... but also

Explanation:
This was a great comedy programme in the 1960s. It's also a common construction in English.

agree  trixiemck: I agree, though I think you need to fill in the gap (and the asker): "Not only did he practice aikido but..." / Not at all. As you mentioned the TV show I took it literally as the beginning of the sentence. Have a nice weekend!
