English translation:... than either Rosas' advances of forty years before or Alsina's more recent trench
Explanation:
I think adding "either" and taking out the "had been" might work well for you here.

Roca's modern rifles were more effective than either Rosas' advances of forty years before or Alsina's more recent trench.

more than rosas' advances had been
than Rosa' advances of forty years...

Explanation:
This is my suggestion. I think it's the use of "had been" in the middle of the sentence which makes it sound strange (as this introduces another clause into the sentence which doesn't seem to sit very comfortably).

"Roca’s modern rifles were more effective than Rosas’ advances of forty years before and Alsina’s more recent trench."

In response to your question, I did think about dropping the "of" - I think the sentence would be ok with or without it.

Explanation:
... forty years earlier or Alsina’s more recent trench (had been).

I don’t know what the proper Spanish usage is, but I would consider using de Rosas, if only to make the distinction clear.

Roca’s modern rifles were more effective than the offensive by de Rosas forty years earlier and Alsina’s more recent trench (had been).

Actually, at the risk of being pedantic, Roca's campaign using modern rifles was more effective than ...

And I like LB's suggestion of using either/or
