English term or phrase: over
indoor unit (HRV type)
original English is a translation from Japanese

"The air supply and exhaust fans should be checked once every one or two months.
You can make a simple check such as below way to check the wind flow, hold a bar of which the end has
a string or other similar light weight item ***over the supply grille and exhaust grille***."

...my doubt is on the preposition "over", could it be "in front of" in the intention of technical writer, as if you keep this bar over the grille you won't see the effects of draughts on the bar...or maybe I did not understand the purpose of the test

over
Explanation:
I would leave OVER as you don't know the exact position of the grille (ie: which way it is facing), and also because it's quite obvious what the writer meant. This is my humble opinion.

Explanation:
obviously, you hold the string in the air flow, to check whether it is working. As far as I can see.

agree  Tony M: Yes, 'over' is fine; it probably means 'hold the rod near the top of the grille and let the string dangle down in front of it', but it's quite clear. CF; 'put your hand over your eyes'

-> exactly! 'Put your hands in front of your eyes' is not what a native speaker would say. Thank you.

agree  Ken Cox: with Dusty (could be also be 'above')

agree  Ken Cox: works with both vertical and horizontal grilles -- the string hangs down in front of the grille in the first case, or it is blown upward in the second case
