The equations to determine the position of an image are derived here. To achieve this, an assumption known as the paraxial approximation is made. Rays incident on a mirror are assumed to do so at only a small angle to the normal. This gives sin q ~ q. The assumption is mostly good as objects are usually a much larger distance away from the mirror than the diameter of the mirror.

On reading the link above further I come to the conclusion that vergence is a more general term which encompasses both convergence and divergence. Convergence is indicated by a positive sign and divergence by a negative sign.

paraxial: Characteristic of optical analyses that are limited to infinitesimally small apertures. Also called first-order or Gaussian optics.
vergence: The angular relation between two light rays that originated at the same object point. Sometimes used to indicate the angle between the visual axes of the eyes.

Explanation:
If your context deals with equations, I am alsmost sure the vergence in question is not the pattern of eye movements, but the property of the lens itself.

Actually, in optics, the proper name for this parameter is vergency. Somehow, in ophthalmology, vergence prevailed, and you can now even find "vergence formulas", that is equations showing relations between vergence and other bsic optical parameters.

Compare, for instance, this Internet extract:

The power or vergence V of a lens is the ***reciprocal of its focal length***

With this dictionary definition:

"Vergency,..***the reciprocal of the focal distance***, being the measure of the degree of divergence or convergence of a pencil of rays." (Oxford English Dictionary)

So vergence is basically the optical power of the lens. Paraxial, I think, refers to the original axis of the beam of light, from which the light rays deflect upon passing through the lens.
