English term or phrase: roll

Skin hooks were used to hold the temporalis muscle as well as the cutaneous flap *with a roll placed underneath it in place*.

Could somebody explain please where roll is placed exactly and what roll is about? Thanks in advance.

Explanation:
Googling "muscular roll" gives a few results in which tissue (muscle) of the patient is apparently rolled up to be inserted under the skin during plastic surgery. This may be referred to as a "roll". Where it could be placed I do not know exactly. It could be the lip, given your reference to the temporalis muscle. In the example it found they did it for a nose.
