Medical - Medical: Pharmaceuticals
English term or phrase: Tolerability
I'm working on a Spanish to English translation that already includes a title in English that contains the word "tolerability."

I would use "tolerance" as "tolerability" does not exist in dictionaries including Merriam-Webster. Do you agree?

The same situation exists for "effectiveness" and "efficacy." I would use "effectiveness." I'm thinking that the title was originally translated from another language into English.

Should I use tolerance and effectiveness and let the customer know? Or should I use their terms, but warn the customer? Or am I wrong?

Thanks for your help

disagree  Alexander Chisholm: definitely not effectiveness - that's efficacy - tolerability is one of the safety parameters.

-> I do not understand your comment. "Eficacia" = efficacy. "Efectividad" = effectiveness. My answer states that there are separate words in Spanish for "efficacy, effectiveness, tolerability, and tolerance" and these are not to be confused. So?

agree  Rachel Fell: maybe the prob. is the way your answer's set out in total -?\\Looks clear now, on revisiting!

tolerability

Explanation:
Definitely tolerability.
Means the ability of a drug or other substance to be tolerated by the body.
In a clinical study there are 2 main aims:
1. to evaluate the efficacy of an IMP
2. to evaluate the safety and tolerability of the IMP

I am a senior medical writer, writing Study Protocols and Clinical Study Reports and this is the termused all the time in this field.

Example sentence(s):
  • Safety and Tolerabilty of Repeat Dosing of GSK233705/GW642444 in COPD
  • This is a Phase IIIb, multi-center, open label, randomized, study that compares the safety and tolerabilty of Intravenous Ferric Carboxymaltose(FCM) vs. standard medical care in postpartum and heavy uterine bleeding subjects with iron deficiency

...A very interesting article about the (very recent) use of the term *tolerability* in the medical literature:-

BMJ 2000;321:77 ( 8 July )

TOLERATING 'TOLERABILITY'
Karin R M Band and David Winstanley, freelance medical translators.

"Until recently, the English language lacked a single, punchy, positively flavoured noun to describe a medicine's (greater or lesser) freedom from side effects. Whereas German has its Verträglichkeit (from sich vertragento agree with something or someone), a word that emphasises the positive aspect of something being well tolerated, all that could be found in English was more or less verbose phraseology, such as a good side effect profile, without any irritant effect, etc, invariably dragging in the idea of something adversenot only clumsy, but, surely, a pharmaceutical copywriter's nightmare. Quite obviously, this was a void that needed filling.
And filled it has been, to a large extent, by the adoption, **over the last 10 years or so**, of 'tolerability' ... "
