A native speaker used destruction, but I would like to use pithing.

Pithing definition
Explanation:
I give you the def. as contained in Dorland's medical dictionary :" Destruction of the brain and spinal cord by thrusting a blunt needle into the spinal canal and cranium; done on animals to destroy sensibility preparatory to experimenting on their living tissues."

Is it in this context that it is used? Then pithing seems correct.
