English term or phrase: index of suspicion
We are having a lively discussion in the English-Danish KudoZ section about the exact meaning of this term.

The sentence is: Raising the index of suspicion should shorten the path to diagnosis

Some argue that "index of suspicion" is synonymous with "level of suspicion" og "degree of suspicion", i.e., the more suspicious you are, the sooner you reach a diagnosis.

Others argue that it refers to the factors or criteria, on which ones level or degree of suspicion should be based, i.e., the broader your criteria for suspicion are, the sooner you become suspicious, and the sooner you reach a diagnosis.

I think it is time we asked if any of you native English-speakers can come up with conclusive evidence to support either interpretation.

Help will be much appreciated.

In using the phrase index of suspicion, doctors are not referring to their suspicion about their diagnosis. By saying "raising the index of suspicion should shorten the path to diagnosis", they mean that they would like to improve the accuracy of the doctor's initial impression about a disease.

Although I'm not a native speaker, I would go for the former, i.e. the more suspicious you are, the sooner you reach a diagnosis.
