RISK FOR SELF-DIRECTED VIOLENCE
Some defining characteristics:
* behavioral clues (e.g. writing, giving away personal items, making a will, taking out a large insurence policy, etc.)
* suicidal behavior

Is it about writing anything? A general inclination?

mood changes that may be revealed in written communication
Explanation:
I think "writing" here is being used as a kind of shorthand way of saying that these indications of behavioral change may be found in written communications from the subject/patient, not merely physical/behavioral action or direct verbal communication.

HERE IS SOME DISCUSSION OF THAT FROM A MEDICAL ENCLYLOPEDIA:

Behavioral clues (e.g., writing forlorn love notes, directing angry messages at a significant other who has rejected the person, giving away personal items, taking out a large life insurance policy)

writing something

Explanation:
If a person who never writes anything suddenly starts writing something, one can suspect that it is a good-bye letter which is being written.

handwriting changes

Explanation:
I'd take it to mean changes in the person's handwriting - it becomes totally different or scribbled or all in caps or something like that, indicative of their change in mental state.

To clarify: I'm not talking about graphology, handwriting analysis and things like that, I'm talking about diaries, letters, notes where the handwriting noticeably changes in a sudden way, e.g., as said above, all in capitals, scribbled, etc. Although not a psychiatric professional I am not speakng from a position of guessing and no experience on this.

disagree  Michael Barnett: Your answer certainly sounds plausible Liz, but mental health professionals are not trained in handwriting analysis and examining depressed people's handwriting is not part of mainstream psychiatry. On the other hand, checking for (goodbye) letters is.
