Military / Defense / pronunciation
English term or phrase: semper fi
The phrase is short for the latin "semper fidelis".
I know how to pronounce the complete. On semper fi, what is the correct pronunciation of "fi", not the common. The correct.
Ben
English translation:[fai] as in fry
Explanation:
That's how US Marines pronounce it. If by "correct pronunciation" you mean the Latin pronunciation, I really don't know.

As far as I know, the expression is not normally abbreviated. It's abbreviated by Marines and perhaps by other groups outside the US.

agree  William [Bill] Gray: Nice link, Oso. I think, however, that in the abbreviated form Kim's suggestion is better. And that MAY be the old Latin pronunciation for the long form as well. Who knows?!

agree  William [Bill] Gray: But when the word "fidelis" is in full, the pronunciation could well be as the link from Oso suggests.

semper fi

Explanation:
The most common pronunciation of "fi" is [fahy] ( [ahy] I, ice, hide, deny )
Used by the US Marine corps.
But the correct Latin pronunciation is "fi" as in [fee] ( [ee] eat, see, need )
