craftsman or crafter

Explanation:
I would use craftsman or crafter. I don't think I've seen craftsperson ever, so crafter would avoid the gender issues. Or use the word for the particular craft: woodworker, wood turner, etc., etc.

agree  Thayenga: I have heard craftsperson on occacions, but hardly ever. :)

agree  amarpaul: Good advice. Lindsay is quite correct technically -- and has the heavy artillery of her cited sources ;-) -- , but really, gender-neutral terms that are less commonly used tend to sound a bit unnatural or forced. Liz has given some good advice here.

-> Thanks for your kind words. I like artisan too (from the discussion) I have to say. And interestingly I think I've tended to hear women refer to themselves as "crafters" more than men, but might just know more women crafters than men!

traditional craftspeople, artisans, or specifically basket makers

Explanation:
Covers both genders. There is a grey area between "basket makers" and "basketmakers".

agree  Shera Lyn Parpia: in this case, yes..... which is why context is so useful!
2 mins
-> Thank you, Shera. The context has expanded now to include other handicrafts, so it looks like "basket weavers" is too specific.

artisans engaged in handicrafts

Explanation:
Since you later specified that the people are visually impaired basket weavers, 'handicrafts' would be an appropriate term for what they are producing. 'Artisans engaged in handicrafts' would be an appropriate generic term to describe the occupation when not limited to basket weaving.

Reference information:
Handicraft, more precisely expressed as artisanic handicraft, sometimes also called artisanry, is a type of work where useful and decorative devices are made completely by hand or by using only simple tools. It is a traditional main sector of craft. Usually the term is applied to traditional means of making goods. The individual artisanship of the items is a paramount criterion, such items often have cultural and/or religious significance. Items made by mass production or machines are not handicraft goods.
Usually, what distinguishes the term handicraft from the frequently used category arts and crafts is a matter of intent: handicraft items are intended to be used, worn, etc., having a purpose beyond simple decoration.

In the United States, at least, the term 'handicraft' is associated with basket weaving, needlework, beadwork, pottery, etc. and NOT with cabinetmaking, watchmaking, etc. where we would refer to craftsmen, craftmanship.

Crafter
When you meet with your customer face-to-face and exchange a product or service for money, it is considered retail sales. Most ***crafters*** start out by making and giving their crafts to their friends and relatives. After a few years of hearing "You should make these and sell them," some people finally do start their own business.
