Lady Chatterly’s Lover as one of the truly great English novels, it is also a sustained and profound reflection on the state of modern society and the threat to culture and humanity of the unceasing tide of industrialization and capitalism. SD
For some, the novel stands as a benevolent portrayal of the early nationalist campaign in India. Others, however, have pointed to Forster’s inability to avoid exotic fantasy in his depiction of Indians. LC
The novel is not a straightforward denunciation of communism, but a moving, blackly comic examination of the contradictions between freedom and happiness that state socialism produces. PB

Explanation:
My immediate reaction on reading this was that these were initials representing references or quotes of the people being indicated. It is not the usual way of bringing up references in an academic text obviously, but people write all sorts of things in all kinds of ways.
Anyway, that was my gut reaction!
