Should I recite the sentence like an actor would, the commas would instantly lose their necessary presence. As for "crackly", imagine the beast standing on dry leaves and it would rightful be cracly. Other options apply, depending on what beast we're talking about. I personally interpreted Tony's added hyphens in "cocked-and-ready" as an additional speed in reading, even higher than the one required between the rest of the adjectives. Or... is it a case of Janejira dropping the commas in transcription?! Else, the sentence looks like some Futurist poetry (Marinetti, Boccioni etc.) in 16mo.
