Should I recite the sentence like an actor would, the commas would instantly lose their necessary presence. As for "crackly", imagine the beast standing on dry leaves and it would rightful be cracly. Other options apply, depending on what beast we're talking about. I personally interpreted Tony's added hyphens in "cocked-and-ready" as an additional speed in reading, even higher than the one required between the rest of the adjectives. Or... is it a case of Janejira dropping the commas in transcription?! Else, the sentence looks like some Futurist poetry (Marinetti, Boccioni etc.) in 16mo. BTW "seperate" is not English, "separate" is. Maurizio

Strong, it is Careful (it takes its time), it is coiled (it has tensioned itself, it is "creepy"" (rather like Gollum), Don't know about "crackly" looks like a poetic weakness, "cocked and ready"

I wasn't for one moment suggesting re-writing this excellently-crafted piece of text, I was merely trying to help Asker by giving a more detailed analysis of how to interpret it, since the lack of any punctuation was clearly at the origin of their comprehension problem.

I do agree that standard English would require commas, but not Tony's hyphens. However, this seems to be creative writing and I think the author purposely did not use commas to intensify the effect of a. the alliteration and b. the sense that the beast is about to pounce, much like a cat stalking its prey.
