Religion / Book for Sunday School teachers
English term or phrase: Department
***Department*** memory work.
It would be particularly appropriate for leaders of the various ***departments*** to plan a weekly session of memory work so that the whole ***department*** can recite together the ten commandments. Ideally, all children should be given the commandments printed out on a sheet to take home and learn.

In a book for Sunday School teachers . What departments are these?
Ana Juliá
Spain
Local time: 02:23
broad age grouping
Explanation:
"Department" is not the same as "class" or "grade level." Here's a simplified example:

Preschool Department: Babies through kindergarten, 0-5 years.
Primary Department: First three grades of elementary school, 6-9 years.
Middler Department: Next three grades of school, 10-12 years
Junior High Department: Next three grades of school, 13-15 years
Youth Department: High School and college-aged young adults
Adult Department: All adults

In the larger churches, each department may consist of many different classes, with a superintendent for each department. In a very small church, each department may be one class, or two departments may be combined, and there is usually one superintendent over all the classes.

In Spanish I have seen these departments: Párvulos, Principiantes, Primarios, Intermedios, Jóvenes, and Adultos. Many other schemes of departmental division are possible. It all depends on the needs of the particular church, and on the levels designed into the curriculum.

Hope this helps.

agree  William [Bill] Gray: As a former Sunday School teacher and church pastor, I think this is in fact the most useful explanation so far. It is simply an administrative grouping according to the needs of the time (several classes; interest groups, etc). Good work, Jane!

Reference: Sunday School Classes and Departments

Reference information:
"While the Sunday School is small or constrained by space it will probably be wise for the whole School to meet together for the first half of the proceedings (not usng departments), and then separate into classes for lessons. As soon as it grows, departments can be established.

In general it has been found best to follow the pattern of day schools for division into beginners (pre-school), infants, juniors and seniors and, as the School grows, into year groups. ... In Sunday School boys and girls often prefer to be taught separately from junior age upward..."
