Religion / a Christian book about engagement and marriage
English term or phrase: young wives
The pressure of your own fantasy
Watching or listening to 'soaps', reading romantic novels, allowing your mind to wander whilst you are ironing or fixing the car. All these fantasies impress you with the thought: 'I want my life to be like that.' This is a special danger for the wife at home. Many ***young wives***, harassed by housework, tied by a family, and bogged down with a marriage that is running into the doldrums, live high on fantasies...

Bearing in mind that the book is a guide for engagement and marriage, is there anything that implies that the term may refer to newly wed women, or does it mean simply women who are young in age?

it is implied that they have not been married for very long
Explanation:
Literally, "young wives" means that the wives are young in years. However, the context here definitely implies that the young women have not been "wives", i.e. married for very long:

" This is a special danger for the wife at home. Many ***young wives***, harassed by housework, tied by a family, and bogged down with a marriage that is running into the doldrums, live high on fantasies..."

These words indicate that the wives are still in the process of being hit by the reality of life as a housewife with a family (= a husband who goes out to work + at least one child). Their married life is at an early stage, which is why they still act like the teenagers they have only recently stopped being (the daydreaming etc). Their marriage is heading for its first crisis, which often happens when the wife is stuck at home with the small child, so possibly the wive portrayed here has only been married for a couple of years.

@Stephanie: A friend of mine who (like me) is pushing 60 has just got married for the first time and is sooo in love with her husband, it is really sweet.
For me she is a "young wife" just as much as any 20 year-old newly-wed

agree  Bernhard Sulzer: I take it as "young, married woman", not a newly-wed. It seems her life as a married woman is well/ill-defined, and she has fantasies of another, more adventurous life, a life lived by women of a similar age in soap operas.

agree  Stephanie Ezrol: it implies both, young in age and early stage of marriage

  -> Thanks, sibsab!

neutral  TrueBaller: I agree with the part on young age, but not with "stage of marriage" For that the term to be used would be "new" such as new doctor, new teacher, new at this job, new mom, new wife...
1 hr
  -> Well yes, my friend is a "new wife", too. I still think that both aspects are implied

agree  Mark Nathan: agree with Stephanie - "young" sugests an early stage in life.
4 hrs
  -> Thanks, Mark!

neutral  Craig Meulen: You betray yourself: "which is why they still act like the teenagers they have only recently stopped being". In this day and age, with many people marrying for the first time when they are already in their 30s, I think it refers more to age.
12 hrs
  -> I am saying that in this case BOTH aspects are there - young in years and married not so long ago
