English to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Slang / Hairy
English term or phrase:Hairy Results in Second Successful Animation Contest
It's the heading of a PR about the result of a short animated films contest.
I know "hairy" means difficult or hazardous in slang, but I can't figure out how it could qualify the results of a contest.
Nothing in the body of the PR itself could be a clue.
Explanation: I would assume upon reading this that the winner of the contest had something to do with something hairy. Maybe a dog or some other animal, or a human with a lot of hair.
Yes, I think it's a play on word - I got from the client a late update indicating that the story was about a "nose hair" :-) Thanks to all! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
(I see jccantrell just posted an answer with a similar suggestion)
Sth like that for example: "Aimed at kids 6-8, Hairy Scary follows the CG-animated adventures of hairy boy Willow and scary girl Constance as they discover ..."

Are you sure there's no clue in the body of the text? It may be that the winning animation features some "hairy" animals or monsters or the like..
Could you give us an idea of what the PR text says?

Dicey results in second successful animation contest.
Explanation: Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
1 a: covered with hair or hairlike material b: having a downy fuzz on the stems and leaves
2: made of or resembling hair 3 a: tending to cause nervous tension (as from danger) <a hairy adventure> b: difficult to deal with or comprehend <a hairy mathematics problem>
Concise Oxford Thesaurus: (informal) a hairy situation: RISKY, dangerous, perilous, hazardous, touch-and-go; tricky, ticklish, difficult, awkward; informal dicey, sticky; Brit. informal dodgy.
Therefore, I would tend to think that perhaps the following sentences might carry the same meaning:
1. Results in the second successful animation contest were difficult to comprehend.
2. Ambiguous results in second successful animation contest.
3. Surprising results in second successful animation contest.
4. Dicey results in second successful animation contest.
However, then again, they might also be saying that the results were actually ...hirsute, somehow. In conclusion, without more context I would be left quite puzzled.
