English translation:sport or catching food, but not quite that well defined
Explanation:
Angling is the art or sport of fishing with a rod and line and either a fly or bait, where the object is to have fun catching fish not necessarily to be eaten.

To my mind, fishing is a catch-all term which includes angling but which also implies that the object is to catch fish for food rather than for sport.

Another point that Tony's comment made me think of is that "angling" is a sport or pastime for enthusiasts and professionals who put a lot of time and effort into it, whereas the person who takes a rod and line out once a year while on holiday is more likely to "go fishing".

Fishing also includes other methods of catching fish, such as long lines, nets, traps and even dynamite!

hence, fishing - is more general... meaning catching fish by any means, whereas angling - only with a rod and line...

agree  Tony M: 'angling' seems to be the 'proper' term preferred by the sporting fraternity, whereas 'fishing' might well be commercial...

-> Yes, a bit more "refined" in my best Jean Brodie accent.

agree  Jeanette Phillips: I think angling is the sport, where it is competitive, fishing on the other hand could last all day without a result. The other use of the word fishing, as Tony says, is the industry of catching fish for people to eat.

-> That's why angling is a sport or an art. The point is the challenge of catching fish not necessarily to be eaten as many fish caught by anglers are then released.

angling vs fishing
rivers and lakes V Oceans.

Explanation:
Angling is for white water (Eateries, Rivers and Lakes) and Fishing is for open water (Bay and oceans, Deep water..)

Most Angling in white water is "fly fishing" This is why "an Angler" Is a Fly Fisher. The NEW correct term for fisherman/woman/person is "A Fisher"
("Fisher" is deemed to be gender neutral)

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=gmail&rls=gm&q=angler ...

BUT... as we are all lazy in Australia, we just say "going fishing".
Doesn't matter if we use a rod and reel, hand line, spear, nets, pots, Traps or dynamite in white water or deep sea fishing.

PS, Anglers and fishers all use tackle, (the one word to describe their equipment) and then the Fly fisher goes angling and the fisher goes fishing all with different fishing Tackle... Just to totally confuse you..

Sport has nothing to do with whether you are a fisher or an Angler

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 1 day43 mins (2009-09-18 15:43:38 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

Fishing and angling in General is hunting, and hunting is now called a sport in definition. As with pig hunting and rabbit and dear shooting, they are also called sports. So you could not define either Angling as a sport and fishing as not being a sport.
Professional fishers do it for a living, so they are mostly called fishers, where as Fresh water cod and Trout for commercial purposes, are farmed, Therefore anglers (fresh water fishers) are generally doing it for their own gratification as a sport (catch and release) and for food to take home.
As fishers (Fisherman) both go fishing off shore for professional, sporting (Catch and release) and for personal food, this is where it is confusing when people state angling is a sport and fishing is not.

Angling is fishing in white water: waterways, Estuaries, Rivers and lakes and fishing is carried out in open water; deep seas, oceans, bays, Islands, and from beaches. (Some fishers do say they are angling if they are at the mouth of a river, but they would be using a rod, real and lure)

Good thing there are no trees in the ocean, so all you have to do is fishing

Also, Anglers use only light tackle, rarely is there a 30kg Golden Travelly or shark in an creak, (Although there are some huge Barramundy where I live.)
most fish caught in white water are less that 5kg.

http://www.flyfishinggear.info/buyers_guide/fly_rods_length....
"Fly Rod Length

Many anglers can spend days contemplating how long their fly rod should be, which is a pity as it takes away from time better spent on the water. By and large, selecting the right fly rod length is generally pretty straightforward. It all boils down to, basically, what you will be fishing for and where you will be fishing and what type of conditions you expect to encounter. Once you have that figured out, selecting the right fly rod length is simple. So let's break things down.

A small, spring creek that has lots of brush will do best when fished with a small fly rod (a shorter fly rod is easier to keep control of in the brush - and a heck of a lot less likely to get broken in-between two trees!). The problem with very short fly rods is that they do not have as much power as a longer fly rod does (they generate slower line speeds), and thus cannot cast as far or do as well in the wind.

Likewise, longer fly rods are best used when fishing situations that are not choked in by brush - which is most rivers, especially when float fishing. The longer fly rod allows for longer casts and greatly improved line mending."
