English term or phrase: cattle breed description/colour around eyes etc. - question
I have had to translate the descriptions for 3 native PT cattle breeds (Minhota, Barrosã & Cachena) for a tourist text.

Two descriptions refer to the 'mucosa'. Here are the drafts:

It has a short, wide head, ** a dark mucous membrane**, and upswept lyre-shaped horns.

It has a chestnut-coloured coat, ***a dark mucous membrane***, and upswept, front-facing horns.

Definitions of Mucous membrane on the Web:

The lining of certain cavities, such as the nose and mouth and intestinal tract, that produces a protective layer of mucus.
www.malariavaccine.org/mal-glossary.htm

The moist lining of the mouth, nose, eyes (conjunctiva), intestine, and other areas.
www.pemphigus.org/glossaryb.html

– the lining of the nose, throat and other cavities of the body that open to the exterior.
wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/epd/ipm/docs/envirowe/gloss.htm

I have found no confirmation in cattle breed sites that 'mucous membrane' is the right term. It is obviously a reference to colouring in the area of the eyes, nose and mouth.

What word could I use instead of mucous membrane?

For a tourist text I think this is OK (except 'snout': not too sure of that!)

mucosae

Explanation:
Hi, I've translated a journal on Italian beef cattle for a number of years and the vets there had me use mucosae or mucosae oris.
This is confirmed by the following FAO site about African shorthorn cattle:

The eyelids, the mucosae and the hoofs are black and the muzzle is black or brown and thick.
