british english expression for "highway"
motorway..dual carriageway

Explanation:
In the United Kingdom, unless a route is classified as a motorway, the term which is used for a vehicular highway may be main road, trunk road, 'A' road/'B' road, "'C' road", "unclassified road", or, where appropriate, dual carriageway. However, in the law of England and Wales the term public highway includes all public rights of way regardless of the kind or amount of traffic they allow, including streets and public footpaths for pedestrians.[15] The term also includes bridleways, which are for pedestrians, equestrians, and cyclists, as well as byways open to all traffic (for all of those users, plus vehicular traffic).

agree  Peter Skipp: "Road" is your word, though "highway" is fine, too. "Motorway" is the BE word for a "superhighway" (Autobahn, Autoroute, Autostrada et c.)

british english expression for "highway"
Highway

Explanation:
It is Highway. A highway is a national link road which transverses the country. Hwy 1 (highway one) a motorway is a multilane road which may be a part of the Hwy but generally is built to express traffic between two points like suburbs or cities but the Highway will contionue or extend from / beyond this motorway.
Some motorways are Toll roads, but in general they try to make a Highway free to travel on as it is meant to be a free to travel on road connecting towns and cities in a country. Motorways which are toll roads are generally a spir road off a Highway and are used as an alternative carriageway to the Highway to bypass heavily conjested areas.

A freeway is a limited access road which enables the free flow of traffic with limited opportunities to enter or exit and is generally used to funnel traffic to a specific destination like a CBD.

Look at a map of Australia and look at the Pacific Highway, or Highway 1, you will see all the toll roads and the motorways and the freeways which join and come off the Highway.

BTW.. We have National Highways and State Highways.

National Highways are funded and maintained by the Federal Government as it is a necessary in the case of War and the infrastructure of the Australian People and Government. State Highways are maintained in joint funding between the federal and State Governments.

Motorways are joint funded between Federal, State and local Governments. Toll roads /Motorways are generally privately funded with the help of Government funding, or built by the government and Tolls collected by a management company (like Queensland Motorways Corp) to pay back to the government..
