I am no literary critic, but the way I see it the poet is comparing the blue gum tree to Scarlett O'Hara, the breeze going through her hair (leaves) and the rest of the image is all about a painting, the contours created by brush strokes, the focal position being mainly upright in the composition of the frame. I perceive it as a three way image: Scarlett, the blue gum tree, the setting as in a painting.
The South African landscape is romanticised to the extent that it is compared to a painting....

Het dikwijls geromantiseerde Zuid-Afrikaanse landschap staat hier in het teken van vrouwelijkheid en lichamelijkheid – het landschap beleeft hier een coming-out, zoals in ‘Bloekomboom’: ‘op ’n vlakte buite malmesbury/ staan ’n bloekomboom soos scarlett o’hara/ teen ’n bult – uitheemse vivien leigh/ ritsel in die bries haar hare/ die kontoere se hale/ vlei haar focal point posisie/ in die grootliks vertikale/ komposisie van die raam’.
