I am no literary critic, but the way I see it the poet is comparing the blue gum tree to Scarlett O'Hara, the breeze going through her hair (leaves) and the rest of the image is all about a painting, the contours created by brush strokes, the focal position being mainly upright in the composition of the frame. I perceive it as a three way image: Scarlett, the blue gum tree, the setting as in a painting.
The South African landscape is romanticised to the extent that it is compared to a painting.... |
