Dear Heba, I searched but failed to find any reference from an English speaking country defining General Education as "our" التعليم العام

As far as I know, التعليم العام refers to either State Funded Education, which we can safely call Public Education, or to Formal Education in the primary, preparatory or secondary phases only, and I do not know if there is a fixed term for this in English (Formal Basic and Secondary Education?), or it may be a third thing which we do not know.

Unless someone provides more information on this in the near future I think we will have to agree on the term Public Education for now. Thank you Mona and Heba so much. I am really grateful to you for your help.

General Education usually consists of a set number of classes in various subjects from the categories of Arts and Letters, Social Science, and Math and Science. These classes are usually not part of your major's requirements, but rather courses that will enrich your understanding of the diversity of human experience so that you may approach your major with a wider world view

So this is at the Uni education level.

I think ultimately the difference lies in the level of attainment ie uni vs. schools (primary/secondary).

I should have clarified in my previous comment that "Public Education" is the education offered by the government/state at government funded schools. "General Education" has a different connotation as Marwa mentioned above.
And when they say
مقررات التعليم العام
this leaves no doubt in my mind that "Public Education" is the type of education they are referring to here.
I don't know that "General Education" has curricula as such.
From the small sentence on offer here, I can deduct that the writer is trying to put to the readers the shortcomings of the "Public Education" and how to correct it in "Public Schools" ie Government funded schools.

In the above article, under the title "General Characteristics," the conception that Public Education means التعليم بمصروفات is corrected since the accurate designation of the latter is "Publicly Funded education" not "Public Education". Other than that, and according to the same article, Public Education is generally synonymous with State Education.

On the other hand, General Education is not a type of education as much as it is a governmental program offered in some foreign countries. It cannot be translated to mean التعليم العام as we understand it in Arabic. It appears that التعليم العام refers either to State Funded Education, i.e, Public Education, or to Basic and Secondary Formal Education, depending on context. For all this Public Education seems to be more right to me. I am not perfectly sure, and I appreciate your comments and explanations.

The term "public education" renders itself readily to this context. I deduct from it that public education leaves a lot to be desired with regards to scientific content and with regards to the use of education in electronics. والله أعلم

I guess we need to differentiate between public education, private education, and general education. Pubic education is always translated to التعليم المجاني أو التعليم الحكومي. However, the public education in the United Kingdom is considered as التعليم الخاص أو التعليم بمصروفات. In the United States, private education is التعليم الخاص, while general education is about التعليم العام. What do you think?
