when translating proverbs:
1) Ideally, find an equivalent proverb in the target language (though that's not always possible)
2) Literally translate the proverb (in correct target language of course), but risk not being understood by the TL reader, as metaphors may become incomprehensible (as in this case, what "EYE" stands for in the source culture may be different from the target culture)
3) Paraphrase the proverb - i.e get rid of the proverb but explain what it says. The imagery will get lost, but at least the communication is successful.
So the question now is: what are you looking for? And ideally, in what context is your proverb spoken? |
