Greetings,

Re "همزة وصل", please could someone tell me what it means literally?

I was just wondering how it comes to mean "the dissolution of diphthongs into their constituent parts" (e.g. 'ˁaynayn', where 'ay' represents a diphthong becomes 'ˁaynay ilbinti', 'the two eyes of the girl') - the diphthong disappears.

Connective/Connecting Hamza

Explanation:
Hamzatul Wasl means exactly what you said, Simon. The main function of the Connective Hamza is to avoid the clash of two vowels making words and sentences flow smoothly. Think of it as the indefinite articles (a,an) in English function-wise I mean. The rules are complicated I'm afraid, hopefully this link will help.
