neutral  Ahmed Alami: i know that you understood what was meant by the Arabic phrase but i think the word substance is often used in chemistry and physics as translation of "مادة"

  -> yes it is used in chemistry and means material but could mean any material too anyway I prefer stationery as suggested by Faud
