Arabic term or phrase: ذات
Greetings,

I'm trying to find a definition for ذات as in ذات الرئة, but none in Hans Wehr's dictionary seem to fit.

This isn't just an academic exercise as it's far easier to remember words when you truly understand them.

Many thanks,

Simon

that which belongs to/has to do with
Explanation:
Actually this is not an easy question, as this particular use of ذات is not usual. Usually ذات means "which has" or "she who has" or "she who is with", but in the case of ذات الرئة it probabaly means "that which belongs to" or "that which has to do with" because it refers to the desease that affects the lungs.

of a, have a

Explanation:
It's a long discussion, but in brief
ذات feminine
ذو masculine
ذوات plural f, ذوو plural m

It's used in this sense to describe a name or a terminology, for example
Marsupials: الجرابيّات
or
Marsupalia: ذوات الجِراب

Pneumonia: التهاب رئوي
or
Penumonia: ذات الرئة

It also has many different uses, such as ذات فطنة
she is a wit person, هي فطنة or as well use هي ذات فطنة

anothee use, ذات مرّة = Once, there was a .... etc

It depends on the context

Explanation:
I agree with Nadia Ayoub, and add:

ذات (the feminine form) can actually take possessive endings, but it has a special meaning, namely, "myself/yourself/himself/herself/ourselves/yourselves/themselves."

الولد ذاته - the boy himself
البنت ذاتها - the girl herself
الاولاد ذاتهم - the boys themselves

Notice that you use ذات, not ذو, regardless of gender or number in this special construction.

Also, ذوي (the plural form) can take the same endings, but it also has a special meaning, namely, "those belonging to [me, you, etc.]," usually in reference to family.

ذويه - his folks [loose translation]
