spusnahme raketa s nauchna aparatura i razgurnahme transpondera Explanation: 'Spusnahme raketa...' hm-m-mmm... If they launched a missile, it would have read 'zapusnahme raketa.' As it is, 'spusnahme' means 'we lowered,' possibly meaning they were in a balloon... maybe... I'd plump for 'we lowered a rocket probe with scientific payload.' That is, I would until I remember that 'scientific' always looks so much neater in English if rendered as 'research.' (No pedantic Bulgarian dissent, please! If you say 'izsledovatelsko' in a very narrow context, we say it in a very broad one. If you say 'nauqno' in a very broad context, we say it in a very narrow one. Period!) As to that 'transponder' business, this piece of equipment is called 'otvetqik' in Bulgarian (hmmm, okay: Russian...) but it is now much more chic to use incomprehensible English words, isn't it... The phrase means they set out a transponder. But hang on a minute, 'setting out' or unfolding a transponder is a bit hard if you are in a balloon. I mean, you'd have to get out of the gondola, and that would mean you are racing the rocket downwards... Not very nice. Still, there's a solution to everything, isn't there? 'Razgrwxane' is best rendered as 'arming': getting the transponder ready for work. So i'd guess your full phrase would best be rendered as 'we lowered a rocket probe with research equipment, and armed the transponder' |
