Yes, I know it says "at the international level", and I may wind up putting that, but what does it mean?

"Una segona residència aprop del mar, va ser l’encàrrec que va fer Màximo Díaz de Quijano, germà solter i bon vivant d’una cunyada d’Antonio López a Gaudí el 1883. És un edifici contemporani de la Casa Vicens, considerada com la primera obra modernista **a nivell internacional,** i amb la qual manté un gran parentiu d’estil."

Explanation:

First of all I must say I agree with Hazel that primera can mean the most important and may well mean it here. However, I don't think the Casa Vicens IS considered the most important modernist work in the world. Built in 1884, was one of the first in Catalonia and the first modernist building Gaudi built. (L-10) in the building by Lluís Doménech i Muntaner, which together with casa Vicens de Gaudí are considered to represent the beginning of Catalan modernism. Unique in that it consists mostly of straight lines, which his later work was almost devoid of. Covered in green tiles , this brick home, surrounded by a characteristic wrought iron fence, has a very moorish feel and was constructed for a manufacturer of ceramics.

The most interesting site in this neighborhood is Antonio Gaudí's first modernist building, the Casa Vicens, on the carrer Carolinas, a singular building with turrets and decoration with mosaics of neo-mudéjar style.

This single-family residence for Manuel Vicens was the first Gaudí designed. The site was small (smaller today after the widening of the street) and conventional structures already existed in the area. This early work exhibits several influences, most notably the Moorish (or Mudéjar) influence, particularly evident at the top. The house is constructed of undressed stone, rough red bricks, and colored ceramic tiles in checkerboard and floral patterns. Manuel Vicens was the owner of a brick and tile factory so the ceramic tiles pay tribute to his employment. The yellow, zinnia-flowered tile, designed by Gaudí, was manufactured by Vicens.

Primer(a) normalment és first. Però també pot ser altres coses, com per exemple ´la més important´. Un exemple seria si diguessis ´aquest país és la primera economia mundial´. Pots escollir first si decideixes que és millor dins del texte total. Tu tens més contexte que jo... però sí que és veritat que estem parlant de 1883... Amb aquesta circumstància potser sí que hauries d´escollir first.
