Catalan term or phrase: Primer matemàtic de l'Estat espanyol
Is it insensitive of me to translate "First Spanish mathematician". It's what we'd say in English. I won't like writing it, but if that's how we'd say it in English, I suppose I have to put it?

Primer matemàtic de l'Estat espanyol
first Spanish mathematician

Explanation:
nothing offensive about saying he was the first Spanish mathematician to be awarded whatever prize... it's what the Catalan says, and, politics and PC sensibilities aside, that's what you have to translate...

agree  Patrick Bones: Absolutely, I guess the doubt arises with the Espanya/Estat espanyol bit... My feeling is that readers outside Spain are unaware of the subtlety that differentiates the two, so I just use "Spain", or in this case "Spanish".
