Catalan term or phrase: termòmetre esmerilat
This is used in the context of distilling a chemical substance.
English translation:ground-glass thermometer
It's rather an elliptical / telegraphic way of phrasing it, but I can't think of any other meaning.
(Ground glass -- that is, glass with a matte finish rather than a shiny one -- is a staple material for lab equipment.)

Esmeril is emery - as in emery paper - and esmerilar is to grind.
I cannot imagine how a thermometer can be linked with grinding. But perhaps this information will help you make the connection from context.
