Art/Literary / a trade /lack of trade in an agricultural society
Catalan term or phrase: margandier
...in a novel. Language used by a person (the narrator in a novel) telling a story about 1850. Sentence is: "...il est fini le temps des margandiers"
I think it is a trade or something to label somebody maybe with no trade.
I am almost sure the term is Occitan,(the text is from Limousing the northern border of Occitan) so I am calling all Catalan speakers to help.
The term DOES not appear in an Occitan text but in a standard French text, only the narrator is an old Limousin inhabitant.
Found one reference in Google, but I'd like to be sure about what it is. Thanks, I know how well this forum works, your help will be most appreciated.

Many thanks to all three of you. I knew the Google reference as stated in my text, so the points went to Claudia for the extra research. I still haven't found the translation though, as I don't want to validate the term based on the one Google reference, especially since it is a word that has fallen out of current language and may have other meanings. I'm concerned it may have meant something else BEFORE turning into "vaurien", so the single Google ref seems to thin. However, thank you very much Fernando and Ariadna too. The strange thing is it's a known writer, so I'll just have to keep searching...

mercader o mercadeig
The closest words I can think of in Catalan which are related to trade are mercader/a (masc. and fem) or mercadeig.
The first option refers to the person him/herself (Somebody in the trade business) and the second option is the action itself, so trading.
Hope it helps,

vaurien / mauvais ouvrier
