Chinese language (monolingual) [PRO]
Chinese term or phrase: 这个打馕和丈夫比较窝囊
This is a description of an Afghani husband. I want to know what "da nang" here means. I can imagine two translations: 1) provider (...this provider and husband is rather timid); 2) food-craving person, i.e., someone fixated on eating.

"用炭火烤饼"是其原意
Explanation:

Bruce, I have found the orginal text for you, I think the original sentence should be \"她和她的丈夫——谢天谢地,他不是那种充满了那些天的屏幕的虬髯美男子,这个打馕的丈夫比较窝囊——被送到·了白沙瓦的宾馆。......\"

因此,此处“ 打馕的”指的是这个丈夫的职业,用来修饰名词“丈夫”, 而这个丈夫又很窝囊没用。至此,\"这个打馕的丈夫比较窝囊\"整句话的意思应该已一清二楚:(The woman\'s husband whose profession is baking buns(or sth.similar) is good-for-nothing\".

What a difference a word can make! I miscopied the text as 打馕和丈夫 when the original was 打馕的丈夫. My difficult was NOT in realizing that 馕 is a kind of staple bread eaten throughout central Asia; my difficulty was in understanding the use of 和. Seems that her husband is a bashful baker. Many thanks!

By the way, last year I went to Turkey to study Turkish in Istanbul. Two reasons: 1) I wanted to experience an Islamic society firsthand, and 2) I know that the Uighur are a Turkic people who speak a language fairly close to older Turkish, so I thought it might be interesting later when I visit Xinjiang to already know some Turkish. In fact, I did see the act of 打馕 close up in the city of Diyarbakir, an ancient city in southeastern Turkey long populated by the Kurdish. It is hard to imagine men doing it. As far as I know, in Turkey it is only the women -- mothers -- who make what many westerners recognize as "naan", the Indian word for this kind of bread. The fire is unbearably hot. I don't see how the women can stand putting their hands inside the oven...
