Explanation:
The person who writes this letter of intent first establishes that (s)he is a legal person who is not drunk, drugged, unconscious, or unwilling, not aware of what (s)he is doing in any shape or form; then (s)he proposes her intention for the other party to accept by saying, "My word will be as good as gold." This means "As long as I am living, I will keep all my promises stated in this letter of intent."
In the courts, once you have sworn in as a witness, your words would be "good as gold", as one magistrate put it in one of my recent court interpreting assignments.
