My understanding is that 方向性 here actually implies 单向性， i.e. one thinks with an objective, or goal at the end; and 展开性 implies one has multiple directions in his thinking and more open to what such thinking might lead to.
If it is describing an artist's idea, I personally think it is better to be translated straight forward - artists are easily misunderstood! ;)
