Chinese to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting / Discussing work of a fine artist
Chinese term or phrase: 方向性思维
The text is written in Chinese by a Chinese artist who is discussing the work of an Austrian installation artist.....the artwork takes the form of a cube shape that is made up of items found in the artist's studio such as chairs etc.....it is described as a 'cabinet of curiosities' and looks a bit like the kind of box of curios that you might find an example of in a museum's collection of Chinese objects.....the general discussion is around the 'thinking' of the artist in her approach to her work.....the work is visual but has something of a conceptual basis....

English translation:directional thinking
Explanation:
directional/expansive thinking
思维 should be thinking, in stead of concept, 概念
My understanding is that 方向性 here actually implies 单向性, i.e. one thinks with an objective, or goal at the end; and 展开性 implies one has multiple directions in his thinking and more open to what such thinking might lead to.
If it is describing an artist's idea, I personally think it is better to be translated straight forward - artists are easily misunderstood! ;)

directional thinking

Explanation:
It is not contrasted with 展开性思维. I doesn't imply 单向性 either.
Think about it. "directional" here means: serving to point the future direction, as of fashion.
My guess: it was translated from English directly to Chinese, misleadingly. Now, when you try to comprehend it and translate it. It all went wrong. But if you simply directly translated word by word. It began to mean something. I think the artist was recognized as trend setting, fashion forward. What so ever.

Sorry, didn't see the following question 展开性思维. So the artical does mean to have 展开性思维 and 单向性思维 compared. Why didn't it just use 单向性思维 instead. My comment has a point though.
