Just wondering if maybe the 背 is wrong... Could it be 辈?
I dunno.
If I were to break it down literally with what you have written I would do so as:
"Acting out the play (their) mothers play."
translating as "acting like mothers..."
However, I am not totally percent sure... It could have some other colloquial meaning...
I'm not positive you can 背 a 戏... I always thought 戏 had to be 唱...
If it is actually '辈' it seems to make more sense, grammatically anyway... 'acting out the play of (their) mothers' generation'
