「增值税」是在「增加出来的价值」上「抽取的税」。举例来说，某个产品或某项服务价值是100元，原厂家甲加上30%的利润以130元的价钱卖给大盘商人乙(100元 x 130% = 130元)，大盘商人乙必须付给厂家130元外加6%的增值税给政府(由厂家甲代收再转给政府)，因此厂家甲收到的货款为130元 x 106% = 137.80元，其中7.80元是要上缴给税务机关的增值税。
如果大盘商人乙再加上20%的利润卖给中盘商人丙，则130元 x 120% x 106% = 165.36元，其中130 元x 20% x 6% = 1.56元是要上缴给税务机关的增值税，大盘商人乙真正收到的货价是 165.36元 – 7.80元大盘商人乙付给厂家甲的货款里所含的增值税 – 1.56元大盘商人乙要上缴的增值税 = 156.00元中盘商人丙付出的真正货价。
如果中盘商人丙再加上20%的利润卖给小贩商人丁，则130元 x 120% x 120% x 106% = 198.43元，其中156 元x 20% x 6% = 1.87元是要上缴给税务机关的增值税，中盘商人丙真正收到的货价是 198.43元 – 7.80元大盘商人乙付给厂家甲的货款里所含的增值税 – 1.56元中盘商人丙付给大盘商人乙的货款里所含的增值税 – 1.87元中盘商人丙要上缴的增值税 = 187.20元小贩商人丁付出的真正货价。
如果小贩商人丁再加上20%的利润卖给最终消费者，则130元 x 120% x 120% x 120% x 106% = 238.12元。这是最终消费者付出的价钱，其中含有各个商人因加上利润所得而要上缴的增值税7.80元 + 1.56元 + 1.87元 + (187.20元 x 20% x 6% =) 2.25元 = 13.48元。
对所有的商人而言，他们付出的增值税都只是利润所增出的价值税 6%，但最终消费者付出的价值税则是总货价130元 x 120% x 120% x 120% = 224.64元之外的 13.48元，政府收到的增值税就是由各个商人处收得的这个总数，也就是最终消费者付出的货价224.64元的6%，所以最终消费者要付出总价为238.12元。

Explanation:
The above price is inclusive of a 6% VAT (Value Added Tax levied at 6%).

This final price is 106% of the price prior to the levy of the 6% tax. The English version should reflect that fact. If it is translated as a "discount" of 6%, then the original price is 94% of the final price after VAT is added. That means the final price is 106.382978723%, not 106%.
(Dividing 106 by 100 is different to dividing 100 by 94.)
