Sentence: 張先生問他的兒子:「你天天看報紙,你知道紙是誰發明的嗎?」

First Attempt: Mr. Cheung asked my son, "You read a newspaper every day, but do you know who invented paper?"

Question One: Had someone asked me to write the Chinese that corresponds to my English translation, I would never have come up with the Chinese provided.

Please compare the following two Chinese sentences and their corresponding translations. Are they correct?

1) 你知道誰發明紙?
Do you know who invented paper?
2) 你知道紙是誰發明的?
Do you know who the inventor of paper was?

Question Two: Would anyone every say or write 紙是誰發明的?without the introductory question 你知道A? In other words, is the construction 紙是誰發明的 limited to indirect questions?

They are correct. As for "2) 你知道紙是誰發明的?" -- You can also translate it to "Do you know by whom paper was invented" or "Do you know who was the person inventing paper".

For Q2:
Would anyone every say or write 紙是誰發明的? -- Yes, we say this because when we ask "你知道紙是誰發明的嗎", the answerer may reply "Yes, I know" while not saying out the name of the inventor unless we directly ask "紙是誰發明的".

neutral  wherestip: I basically agree with your answer, except 你知道誰發明紙? is a poorly worded Chinese sentence. IMO most people would pose the question as 你知道紙是誰發明的(吗)?
