Chinese term or phrase: 学习委员
Hi,

This term is used in a high school context.

I've looked it up online for its English equivalent, and I found translations like "study monitor," "study commissar" and "commissary in charge of studies."

"Study commissar" sounds better to me than the other two. "Study monitor" conjures up an image of a computer screen in my mind. "Commissary in charge of studies" is too long for a title.

Besides "study commissar," I was wondering if "teaching assistant" would be easier to understand in this context, an application letter to a graduate program. Your comments would be highly appreciated.

study monitor/commissary in charge of studies
Explanation:
Hello,

Your "Study Commissar" is good enough based on China mainland, as your term is in simplified Chinese. However, according existing terminology and my own educational experience in China, I prefer to say study monitor or better commissary (better than 'commissar' which is more political and ancient than in sense of representative). If necessary, commissary in charge of sutdies would be perfect and match well the context.

Hope this helps, and see follows for your ref.:

学习委员
commissary in charge of studies
commissary in charge of studies 学习委员 commissary in charge of entertaainment content.chinahr.com

study monitor
student leader 班长 monitor 学习委员 study monitor 体育委员 student in charge of bbs.dict.cn

study team leader

Explanation:
I think this term in Chinese means the person who is in charge of the coordinations between the teacher and the students for the certain subject in the class. So it is better to call him or her a leader than a commissar, which is very formal word in an organization or a party.

neutral  lai an: class monitor 班长? commissary sounds like Chinese English (-> it would need a footnote IMO). Further IMO it sounds like the name of an office rather than a person (but that is just me).

Reference: Prefects and Monitors in English and American Secondary Schools

Reference information:
I don't know what duties a 学习委员 is in charge of. However, I do know "monitors" are common in British secondary schools.

Please refer to the followings:

A closer approximation to the English prefect is perhaps provided by the American service squad member, monitor or school aide. This is one of a group of high school students who has varied responsibilities connected with maintaining order on school premises. He may, for example, supervise traffic in corridors and in the cafeteria to ensure orderly and safe movement; he may be a monitor who, in addition to maintaining order and quiet, runs errands for teachers, escorts visitors within the building and fulfils similar "service" functions in the school. The basis of selection for such responsibilities varies considerably, though a combination of nomination and approval by teachers and willingness by pupils generally determines membership of this group.

Monitors can rarely do more than report an offender to a teacher. In certain instances they may be able to assign punishments, though this is rare and likely to be the result of unusual local conditions.

Through some web searches, it appears to me that 学习委员 is also a STUDENT who has been assigned certain duties in a class.

So the role of a "teaching assistant" is not suitable here because a teaching assistant in American universities is considered a STAFF MEMBER who is in charge of teaching-related duties for university students. He/she is not a student in the class in which he/she works as a teaching assistant although he/she is a student in a certain graduate program.

Note to reference poster
Asker: Thank you for your input. That's very useful.

Asker: Yes, 学习委员 is a student who assumes a leader role in the class. Sorry I didn't point that out. So, a teaching assistant is considered a member of the faculty. Got it! Thank you so much for explaining this.
