Chinese term or phrase: 地主庄园
经济上还没有完全解决温饱,就开始把学校修得如当年的地主庄园一样。

I only need a rough translation. My try: "renovating a school building into a temple-like mansion regardless of the economic needs of local villagers"

But, I'm not very satisfied with the translation into "temple" -- i don't think it gets the same meaning across in the Western context.

Please advice. Thanks!!

I think "地主," as a social class, is probably best translated as "landlord."

Also, "mansion" doesn't really provide a sense of "园" in my opinion.

to respond to lai an's neutrality... you could also translate it as "landlord manors..."

"manor of landlord," however, sounds very awkward and un-English to me...

-> How about 'the landed gentry'? Those who built nice mansions were not only landlords but also the gentry class.
