With this scheme, we assign a Chinese character a specific code according to the zone and the position where it is. For instance, the character 中 situates in the 54th zone and at the 48th position. Thus, its name in Zone Bit Code is 5448.

Chinese characters are mapped in a code table of 94 x 94 matrix. Each line is called a zone. When we look up a Chinese character, we find out firstly in which code zone it is and then find out the position of it in the zone.
