Chinese term or phrase: tao
I have a question.
What does "tao/dao" in traditional chinese medicine mean in English?

way, path or else?

Thank you in advance.

English translation:ideology
Explanation:
the Chinese character “tao/dao/道” has a very wide range of meanings.

to be basis and figurative,as a noun,it could be translate into way or path or road。
for example,railway=铁道,subway=地道
to be a little abstract,it's the assembly of many methods and principles
for example,茶道=the art of tea,天道=natural law

here, the "tao/dao" in traditional chinese medicine,is a very very very abstract concept.

it concludes:
1 the principle of disease(five-element theory)
2 the constitution of human's body(acupoint and meridian)
3 under what circumstance can a man be described as healthy(complexion, coat of the tongue, hair quality, timbre and volume, and other signs are all observed)
4 advocated lifestyle, which is tightly linked with the theory of Taoism

to sum up, it's the ideology of traditional chinese medicine

by the way ,the verse mentioned by Roy vd Heijden above,is the very beginning of <Tao Teh King>/<道德经>,which is the bible of Taoism. The <Tao Teh King>/<道德经>is written in the language of ancient Chinese 2500 years ago, recording complex and mysterious thought of LaoTse/老子.It's very obscure to our nowaday chinese also.I can hardly tell about whether Roy vd Heijden's translation is right or not,I'm also not sure whether my own understanding is accurate or not,but if you read these words carefully, you would know it better than most native Chinese.

Thanks for your earnest in our traditional medicine and language.I hope my answer is useful to you
