1) 砝码 is better interpreted as counterweight/counterpoise, weight is also OK, but not so easy to get the exact meaning at first glance

2) Can't agree with "drop weight", since wherever it's used for, it means "重锤/落锤" or sth. like that, but in this context, 砝码 is referred to the counter weight located on the other side to measure the impact force...
