the bill of lading is an important document of ownership. It confers 'title' to the goods. It is necessary both to take delivery of the goods and for banks to release payment to the shipper (if I remember correctly). If there are variations from what is stipulated on the bill of lading, then there are problems. I think the Bill of Lading needs to be altered? (reissued I haven't heard of, maybe replaced/renewed??? that's a guess). Anyhow there are certain difficulties. a clean bill of lading is desirable. changes may result in amendments to the B/L (a 'dirty' bill of lading) Perhaps that is what this is referring to???
