"toast" or "fried bread" Explanation: "Toast" would be the word that I would use when translating "topinka". However, being Czech, I know that there is a huge difference between English/American "toast" and Czech topinka. While the former is dry, made in a toaster and eaten with butter and jam, the latter is more of a "fried bread", which would be a more appropriate word to use because topinka is fried, and therefore crispy and sligtly soaked with the oil used during frying. Also, it may be useful to know that Czech topinka never comes sweet. The plain way to serve it is usually with salt and a bit of garlic. Otherwise, and especially in restaurants, topinka is always topped with something like ham, some veggies and cheese. However, there are different variations of what you can get on your topinka, so read the menu carefully and enjoy!! |
