Czech term or phrase: stopa
Počasí se postupně měnilo a ideální stopa byla čím dál více rychlejší, takže časy se pochopitelně začaly hodně pohybovat směrem dolů.

My attempted translation so far is:

The weather slowly changed, the ideal footprint< increased in tempo, forcing everyone to slow down.

My Czech consultant proposed the following, but I still don't really get it, even though I've cycled for years.

the ideal racing line
Explanation:
Google has quite a few references. At last all those Sundays of having to put up with F1 and Moto GP have come useful :-)

By the way, I don't think that it forced everyone to slow down... On the contrary, their times got faster!
