Europäische Normen unterscheiden nach der Spannungshöhe drei Bereiche:
* Kleinspannung (Wechselspannung bis 50 V und Gleichspannung bis 120 V)
* Niederspannung (Wechselspannung bis 1000 V und Gleichspannung bis 1500 V)
