Danish term or phrase: i forste klasse
In an article about life in a "Mellem- og Realskole," a former student writes: "En vis geografitime i forste klasse gaar mig aldrig af minde. Vi havde eksamen... Jeg kom op i Vestjylland..." Since I'm not overly familiar with the Danish educational system, I'm not sure how to tranlate "i forste klasse." I assume it's not equivalent to American English "in first grade," since those students would be about 6 years old. English translation:sixth grade
Explanation:
Der refereres til Mellem- og realskole, which at the time was 'middle school' or secondary school or grammar school (BRE).
You spent the first 5 years at the local school / small school / village school - and then the children who were academically apt or whose parents could afford it - moved to 'mellemskolen'. So, this was the first grade of this new school.
Mellemskolen: første til fjerde mellem -> mellemskoleeksamen, which would allow you to start at 'gymnasiet' for 3 years and then on to University or the high schools (polytechnics / dentist etc..)
Alternatively the children continued to 'realklassen' for a final exam giving access to vocational education (teacher's training, nurse, office assistent etc.)

neutral  Charlesp: I am not sure this isn't the seventh grade. (6th grade is 10 or 11 years old; 14 would be 9th or 10th grade)). The point being that a reader would think that the pupil, if in 6th grade, was 10 or 11; and a beginning Realskole pupil is older than 11, I th
