So that you stay on the ball / to keep you on the ball
to keep your hand in
keep you on your toes
.... but I think I like ´nose to the grindstone´ best in this case.
The toolmaker sharpening tools or the blacksmith forging them - the situations in the metaphors are close, and usage is very similar.
